Cape Cod style homes are one of the most popular types of houses to build in West Virginia, as well as in most of the rest of the country…and for good reason! These steep-roofed houses were inspired by 17th century coastal New England homes, and have been modernized with practicality, stability, and affordability in mind.
Read on to find out more about Cape Cod style homes, why they are so popular, and how you can get the perfect Cape Cod to fit your lifestyle!
What is a Cape Cod Style Home?
A Cape Cod house is a low, broad home with a moderately steep pitched roof, often with a large central fireplace. Originating in New England in the 17th century, the simple rectangular design and steep roof was built to withstand the extreme weather of the area. There were many adaptations of this classic home style in the suburban U.S. beginning in the 1930s and continuing to this day. Contemporary Cape Cods are designed for easy modern living while retaining the spirit of the classic American home.
Cape Cod homes are usually 1 1/2 story houses built with simple, classic designs. The main bedroom(s) are usually located on the first floor, with a large second floor area that can either be left unfinished for attic storage or finished for extra living space. Because of the relatively simple design, Cape Cods are generally inexpensive to build, and can range from 800 square feet or less to well over 3,000 square feet.
West Virginia homeowners often choose the Cape Cod design because it is a great mix of simplicity, beauty, and affordability. The relatively steep roof and sturdy base were built to handle heavy snow loads, high winds, and other extreme weather, making it a perfect choice for the unpredictable weather in West Virginia.
Though there are certain obvious characteristics of this style, you can customize a Cape Cod just like any other home style. Garages, porches, and open floor plans are all well within the scope of this type of home design. Adding dormers to the second story is a popular way to break up the dominant roofline and add natural light into the attic or upstairs living areas.
